Zoom into Soil: Soil Use and Management Journal Editors Pick

Apr 30, 2026 | Videos

In this webinar, the Editor-in-Chief and contributors of the Soil Use and Management Journal discuss forestry and soil data.

Our first speaker Olivia Azevedo is a soil scientist at Forest Research, UK, where she supports Defra-funded research on soil sustainability and forest ecosystem health. Her current work focuses on the microbial communities – bacteria and fungi – that drive soil function across land-use types including agroforestry, short rotation forestry, and hedgerows. She uses metabarcoding and eDNA approaches to link microbial community composition to environmental drivers. Her broader research interest lies in understanding the long-term belowground consequences of land-use change, including the role of soil structure and carbon dynamics in maturing woodland systems. She will be discussing her paper: Long-Term Effects of Woodland Creation on Soil Carbon Stocks and Aggregate Distribution in Central Scotland – https://bsssjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/sum.70162

Our second speaker, Lisa Lobry De Bruyn is a researcher and educator in School of Environmental and Rural Sciences at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia. Her research focuses on farmers’ understanding of soil health, and soil information seeking behaviours that will improve how we share soil information and build genuine partnerships with land managers. Into the future such research will improve the monitoring of land condition for sustainable land management and soil use. She will be discussing her paper: How can soil data and information become actionable knowledge to advance sustainable land management – https://bsssjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/sum.13115
