Agricultural Land Classification: protecting the best and most versatile agricultural land
Most of our land area is in agricultural use. How this important natural resource is used is vital to sustainable development. This includes taking the right decisions about protecting it from inappropriate development. Government policy to protect agricultural land for England is set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) last updated in December 2023. A new NPPF is currently out for consultation. This webinar will focus on the mechanism for implementing the elements of the NPPF to protect the best agricultural land, the Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) system. It will also provide an introduction to the popular BSSS Working with Soils course, by the same name, which this year runs on 13 and 14 November at Cranfield University. Course Director Gill Shaw and other course tutors will briefly explain the history, principles and practice of carrying out an ALC survey.
