Society Committee Roles

Voluntary

Are you keen to give back to the soil science community? Do you want to make a difference to soil science and help others advance their careers or learn about the sector?

We are looking for members to support the following committees which all meet on a quarterly basis:

Grants and Awards Committee

  • To review requests for grant support, and
  • Develop and update the grants offered by the Society to meet the Society’s strategic objectives.

For more information about the role of the committee, please review the Terms of Reference.

“I’ve been involved with BSSS in various roles for many years.  Looking back to my first role, an Ordinary Member of the Council of what was then known as IPSS (Institute of Professional Soil Scientists) I remember thinking about just how much I didn’t understand or know and questioning why I was there (Imposter Syndrome I think).  But I also look back and realise how much support and encouragement I was given (Brian Chambers was absolutely brilliant in this respect) and also just how much I have learned and the network I now have through these roles. These roles have built my confidence, my ability to engage, collaborate, problem solve and lead and I have used all of this in subsequent roles with BSSS and with other organisations, as well as in my day job where these skills have definitely helped me on my career journey, allowing me to showcase a greater depth and breadth of experiences.  And whilst there have been complex and difficult things to do, I have loved it all and had some great (and different) experiences as a result. I would encourage you to get involved – start the journey (the support will be there) and take time to reflect on what you have gained and how you can use this going forward, recognising that there will always be new things to learn (I am definitely still learning!).”

Bruce Lascelles, Grants and Awards Chair and Past-President
