Important Update to Early Career Membership

Oct 24, 2023 | Featured, News

We are delighted to confirm that an important update has been made to the Early Career (EC) membership category.

It is now easier for Early Career members to transition into Full Society membership.

Early Career members who have previously completed a PhD with a high level of soil science content, will now only be required to gain two further years of professional experience, rather than five years, before applying for Full membership.

This update has been implemented with the backing of the Early Careers Committee, to fully support our Early Career members and recognise the valuable professional soil science experience gained during their PhD.

To support Early Career members in understanding which category of membership they will be eligible for in 2024, we have created a guidance document on the categories of membership available and the experience required to transition from one to another.

Full Membership

Full membership is an acknowledgement of your professional status and demonstrates a dedication to your professional growth, also allowing the use of the M.I. Soil Sci designation. Full members are also eligible to apply to be a Chartered Scientist.

To ensure you renew in the correct membership category in 2024, please get in touch if you are an Early Career member and think you may be eligible for Full membership by emailing your CV to admin@soils.org.uk with, if relevant, the soil science content of your PhD clearly demonstrated. All applications for a change in membership will be reviewed by our Professional Practice & Development Committee and can take up to 60 days to complete.

If you have registered for the Early Career Conference, which will take place on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 December, in Belfast, we will be running a drop-in session on the second day to discuss the membership changes and answer any questions that you may have. It is a fantastic opportunity to network with your peers and find out more about your membership pathway.

If you have any questions regarding your membership or any of the details above, please get in touch with our team.
