Dr James Rowson is Chair of the Northern Soil Network and a BSSS Council Member
James is a geoenvironmental soil scientist with over 20 years’ experience specialising in peatland systems, wetland restoration, and soil carbon dynamics. His career spans academia, consultancy, and government advisory roles, with a focus on applying soil science to address complex environmental challenges. James is a Land Quality Principle at Jacobs and has led and contributed to large infrastructure projects as well as government research projects.
He has particular expertise in hydrological assessment, greenhouse gas fluxes, and peatland restoration planning, and has played key roles in long-term climate change experiments such as PEATBOG and PEATCORE. James is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised multiple PhD projects on topics ranging from microbial ecology to salt marsh managed realignment. As Northern Region Chair, he is committed to promoting soil science through collaboration, outreach, and mentoring.
