The British Society of Soil Science is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Morris as our new Executive Director, from 5 February 2024.

Andy joins us from the B2W Group and will be taking over from previous Executive Officer, Sarah Garry. He previously worked for the Landscape Institute and brings with him strong experience at a senior level with cross sector exposure.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Society and working with the board, members and team at this pivotal time for the sector.  As we know soil science is central to climate change mitigation, biodiversity net gain and food security, all of which is vital for future generations and the longevity of this planet we call home. As such the challenges we face are unprecedented.  I plan to build on the solid foundations laid by the previous Executive Officer, Sarah Garry, whilst working collaboratively with the exec team and membership, to raise the profile of the sector in conjunction with equipping its members with the vital future skills needed to tackle these future challenges.”

This is an exciting time for the Society with developments in many areas including policy, soil courses, partnerships, and a new soil science apprenticeship, amongst many others.

“Andy brings his significant senior executive expertise to the British Society of Soil Science to lead our organisation at an exciting time as we enter a new phase of greater impact, influence, and excellence. I am looking forward to working with Andy with the Board of Trustees to co-develop our strategy to deliver our mission to support and promote the discovery of new knowledge of soils and their role in global sustainability. His background in leadership in membership organisations brings an inclusive and collaborative approach that supports and champions members. Andy’s skills and people focus will help us lead, influence, and inspire the next generation of soil scientists and develop key partnerships with external organisations to meet our vision of sustainable soils for people and planet.”

Jack Hannam, BSSS President

We look forward to welcoming Andy to the Society when he formally starts in February and are excited to see what the future holds under his expertise and leadership.
