The British Society of Soil Science, along with The Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health and the International 4 per 1000 Initiative are delighted to be hosting a policy dialogue luncheon, at the upcoming SB58 UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, on Thursday 15 June. This will be an important event where experts will reflect on strategic policy points, and it will provide an opportunity to garner further strategic support for the advancement of soil health within national and global policy processes.
Expert speakers will make short reflections on:
- The Bonn climate change negotiations discussions and integrating soil health within key negotiating tracks of UNFCCC.
- Policy advocacy routes across the Rio conventions for soil health.
- Country representatives to engage on national policy entry points for soil health within the NDCs and LDN targets.
This will be an opportunity to carve a clear policy road map for action on Soil Health both within global and national level policy frameworks.
The luncheon will be one of the events at the SB58 Conference — The 58th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SB 58) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Subsidiary Body are committed to guiding and supporting Parties to help deliver robust outcomes at the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28). Building on the momentum gained in Sharm el-Sheikh at COP 27, all parties involved are keen to work towards ambitious outcomes at COP 28 to respond to the urgency of climate action, and move towards achieving the goals of the Convention and the Paris Agreement.
The Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH) was launched at the UN Food Systems Summit and continues to grow with over 130 members from government, NGOs, private sector and research institutions, of which BSSS is a part of. The main goal of the Coalition is to improve soil health globally by addressing critical implementation, monitoring, policy, and public and private investment barriers that currently constrain farmers from scaling healthy soil practices.
The Coalition, in collaboration with the “4 per 1000” Initiative, has developed a Soil Health Resolution to advance comprehensive soil health into policy frameworks at continental, regional and national level. The Soil Health Resolution is a set of commitments to enable and scale healthy soil practices to mitigate and adapt to climate change, with the aim of ensuring soil health is integrated into the UNFCCC key negotiating tracks.
This event and the soil health resolution is an important step in securing global protections for soils. To find out more about how you can support the CA4SH ambition and enquire about the event, contact us at exec@soils.org.uk
