Dirt Science: An introduction to soil systems

Event date:
Monday, September 25, 2017 to Friday, September 29, 2017
Event venue:
Cranfield University, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, MK43 0AL, United Kingdom
Event description:

Cranfield University in collaboration with the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) and the Soil Security Programme (SSP) are hosting a NERC advanced training course in soil science at Cranfield University campus in September.

This 5 day residential course is fully supported by NERC and offered at no cost to the participant.  Participants will also be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs.

The course is open to all PhD and post-doctoral researchers studying soils, or whose research is at the interface of soil science and other disciplines. Priority will be given to NERC-funded students / early career researchers although others funded by alternative streams can also apply.

The course offers participants an opportunity to:

1.    Develop systems thinking in soil science  through the concept of soil functions including the multi-functionality of soils in the environment

2.    Systematically characterise soils in the field and their potential functions

3.    Develop multidisciplinary approaches in soil science including devising a multidisciplinary research proposal for a key challenge in soil science research

4.    Translate soil science research for effective knowledge exchange and sound evidence for science policy
