Event description:

The Scottish Soils Discussion Group will be hosting a meeting in Edinburgh to promote and discuss the range of data and knowledge available on soil organic carbon (SOC) in Scottish soils, highlighting effective management options for SOC conservation and potential for C sequestration. How much C do we have in Scottish soils?  Can we sequester more C in Scottish soils?

The objectives of this meeting are:

  • To showcase current knowledge of SOC stocks in Scottish soils including SOC measurements across land uses, modelling and mapping.
  • To discuss the capacity for increased C sequestration as a means of GHG mitigation as highlighted by the ‘4per1000’ initiative and evidence available on potential C saturation.
  • To review practical guidance for SOC management and conservation across land uses.
  • To provide a forum for people in different organisations to discuss ongoing and future activities, to highlight potential gaps in knowledge and to develop ideas for future collaboration and research.
