Matt Aitkenhead is a soil scientist working at the James Hutton Institute and based in Aberdeen. He works on the monitoring of soil through remote (e.g. satellite) and proximal (e.g. mobile phone camera) sensing, and is particularly interested in the categorisation and characterisation of soils using models that integrate data from multiple sources. He also works on relating soil character to function and ecosystem services, and on the relationships between soil characteristics and their visual appearance.

Bruce is the Past Chair of the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists and a Trustee of the British Society of Soil Science. Bruce has a background in Soil Science and Forestry and undertook a PhD investigating the development of soils in North Wales over the Holocene in relation to environmental change and human impacts. After completing a Post Doctoral research project at the University of Leicester looking at the mechanisms of rill formation Bruce moved into consultancy and has developed significant expertise in habitat creation, restoration and translocation (and was a co-author of the CIRIA Habitat translocation – a best practice guide), and in the design of appropriate soil handling methodologies. This has included work on a wide range of habitats, including lowland raised bogs, blanket bog, heathland, marshy and chalk grassland and river systems. Bruce is currently the UK Business Director for Environment at Hyder Consulting and continues to manage and deliver environmental assessment projects focusing on soil, biodiversity, hydrological and geomorphological issues in relation to a wide range of projects. Bruce is committed to delivering expert technical solutions to enable clients to achieve their objectives in a sustainable manner and has a proven track record of working closely with clients and gaining their trust and of undertaking stakeholder consultation. Bruce is passionate about promoting the importance and wider understanding of soils. Bruce is also a member of the Canal & River Trust Environmental Advisory Panel and CIWEM Natural Capital Network Steering Group, and sits on the Cranfield University Environment Industry Advisory Panel.

I specialise in agriculture and soils consultancy, which includes: soil surveying; Agricultural Land Classification (ALC); Preliminary Environmental Impact Reports; Environmental Statements and Soil Management Plans. My research background has provided me with a passion for improving the soil quality through innovative techniques which may have the potential to contribute to mitigating climate change through the increased carbon storage within soils and increasing our food security.
